This Journey is Great For: Spa
Itinerary - 6 Days
DAYS 1 and 2: Depart U.S. and Arrive in Iceland
You will be met by your guide in the arrival hall, who will take you to your private coach. The route leads from Keflavík airport to the Blue Lagoon where we start with a breakfast from the buffet to regain some energy after the flight. The Blue Lagoon is a unique formation: a lagoon with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water in a middle of a black lava field. The high natural levels of silica and minerals give the Lagoon its rich blue colour. The facilities include modern changing rooms and showers, an indoor geothermal pool, a winter garden, restaurants and other services. A visit to the Blue Lagoon is invigorating whether one bathes there surrounded by snow in the middle of the winter or in the long summer daylight. We stop there for approximately an hour for a memorable swim.
After our visit to the Blue Lagoon we continue to Reykjavík for a City Sightseeing, from the northernmost capital in the world, where more than a third of the Iceland's population lives. During this tour we will see the old town centre, the Parliament, the Cathedral, the harbour, the Pearl, the National Museum and Höfði house, the summit site of 1986. We drive past the city's salmon river and the Árbæjarsafn outdoor folk museum, which offers an interesting contrast to the modern buildings of the most recent part of Reykjavík. Drive continues past Reykjavik's largest outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur which is heated with water from natural hot springs under the city, the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum and Hallgrímskirkja Church. The tour ends at the hotel for check-in. Rest of the afternoon on own leisure and rest until dinner in a downtown restaurant. (B,L,D)
DAY 3: Golden Circle and Fontana Spa
The Golden Circle is probably the most popular daytour out of Reykjavík and for good reason. This is a full-day round tour of the south-west of Iceland and includes three of the best known attractions Iceland has to offer. Gullfoss (The Golden Waterfall), one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe with thousands of tons of icy water thundering majestically into a deep canyon. The Geysir Area, with numerous hot springs, fumeroles and geysers, including the 30 meter spouting world known Strokkur, and Þingvellir, a remarkable geological site and a historic site as well. Þingvellir is the site of the world's oldest democratic parliament founded in 930 and the beautiful canyon running through the park is actually the dividing faultline between two of the earth’s tectonic plates.
You will also visit the Fontana steam baths for a wonderful spa experience on the the edge of the beautiful Lake Laugarvatn. These modern facilities were opened in the summer of 2011 but the locals have been coming to this location for decades to relax and unwind. You can therefore enjoy an agelong local tradition but with modern amenities to enrich your experience. (B,L,D)
DAY 4: Reykjadalur Valley
Departure from Reykjavík to nearby Hveragerði village, one of the few towns in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area. We hike to the beautiful Reykjadalur valley. On our way, we encounter hot springs and see hot steam plumes rise from the ground. We can take a dip in the Reykjadalsa River where geothermally heated water meets fresh mountain streams, creating the perfect temperature for bathing in untouched nature.
In the afternoon, we will participate in a Cook & Dine workshop at Salt Eldhús. At Salt Eldhús we firmly believe that the best way to get to know any country is through your taste buds, so our ingredients and cooking style are decidedly Icelandic with a new Nordic twist. A three-course meal with wine and a recipe folder is included in the price of the course along with some snacks at the beginning of class. (B,L,D)
DAY 5: Thórsmörk Nature Reserve
Today we are going to experience an adventure with Modified Super trucks - offroading and crossing rivers. We will spend the day exploring the Þórsmörk area, a beautiful nature reserve situated between three glaciers. One of them, the towering strata volcano Eyjafjallajökull, is probably the most famous volcano in the world today. In Þórsmörk there are many hiking trails through valleys with birch trees, glacial rivers, streams and wonderful mountain scenery. Passing through rough mountain tracks and crossing un-bridged glacial rivers adds to the delight and excitement of this spectacular area.
On the way back to Reykjavík we will stop at the Secret Lagoon natural hot springs that are located in the small village of Fludir. The pool’s natural surroundings and steam rising into the air gives the place a magical feeling. The warm water stays at 38-40 Celsius all year. In the whole area, there are several geothermal spots and a little Geysir, which erupts every 5 minutes, showing off for the guests relaxing in the hot spring. (B,L,D)
